Pictures of the D&RGW Railroad

Sometimes I see pictures that I just have to share, even if they aren't from areas that I'll be modeling.

D&RGW Locomotives #1803 and #3559 are at the head of eastbound Train #2, The Royal Gorge, as they near Mitchell on Tennessee Pass. M-68 (4-8-4) #1803 is the road power for the train, with L-109 (2-8-8-2) #3559 serving as the point-helper this morning. #1803 would have brought the train to the foot of the grade at Minturn, with #3559 being added to the point to aid in the fight to the top of the pass. Photographer Ralph Hallock notes that the train consisted of 11 cars and was making 15 mph when it passed.

Trains like this were a strong argument for modelinng Tennessee Pass when I was pondering the location for my layout. Eleven heavyweight passenger cars and two locomotives struggling against the grade were something that I would have enjoyed seeing on my layout.

Denver & Salt Lake #400 and Denver & Rio Grande Western #3616 sit at Utah Junction on a bright December day in 1947.

Lima built Mikado (2-8-2) #400 in 1915. This locomotive became D&RGW K-63 Class #1220 when the D&SL was absorbed into the larger railroad in December of 1947 (the month this picture was taken). The scrapper's torch took #1220 in October, 1953. People seem to either love or hate the K-63s. The Coffin Feedwater Heater hanging off of the front of the boiler certainly made these locomotives standout on the Rio Grande.

L-132 Class #3616 (2-8-8-2) was erected by Alco in 1930 and served until being scrapped in October of 1956. The articulation of the front engine is clearly visible in this shot of the locomotive sitting on a curve.

With the ladder propped against the side of the locomotive, #400 is obviously undergoing some basic maintenance. I'm curious what that is propped against the front engine of #3616. I have no idea. Perhaps someone here can offer a clue.

Storms forced the closure of Union Pacific's mainline across Wyoming in February 1949. UP detoured critical trains over the Moffat Route to maintain their service. Here we see UP Train #28, the "San Francisco Overland" at Arena, Colorado on February 19, 1949. F3 #906 leads 16 cars eastbound toward Denver and UP home rails. D&RGW train X3618 East can be seen in the background at Clay.

Ralph Hallock captured the Rio Grande Ski Train climbing the front range between Arena and Clay on February 19, 1949. Eleven cars trail L-132 Class 2-8-8-2 #3611 westbound on a bright winter morning. This pre-dates the arrival of the former NP coaches and we see a mix of D&RGW heavyweight equipment on this train. You won't see many pictures of the Ski Train without a Grande Gold consist.

L-105 Class #3701 (4-6-6-4) and an unknown L-132 Class (2-8-8-2) at Minturn, Colorado in July 1948. At one point in time, I considered building a layout based on the operations over the west side of Tennessee Pass. If you like watching locomotives straining to move tonnage through spectacular scenery, you'd have a hard time finding a better area to base a layout on.
